Trident Health Breaks Ground on New Emergency Room in Johns Island

Trident Medical Center broke ground on September 25 on a long-planned free-standing Emergency Room on Johns Island, which will be one of three that Trident Health System is planning around the Lowcountry, according to CEO and President Jeff Wilson.

Expanding Healthcare Services in the Lowcountry

The new Emergency Room is scheduled to open in September 2026 and will be located on a 56-acre site off Maybank Highway, which could eventually grow into a hospital. The site will also host a medical office building, an ambulatory surgery center, and other facilities.

Meeting the Growing Demand for Healthcare Services

The population of Johns Island is growing rapidly, with nearly 28,000 residents, and Trident’s goal is to provide quicker emergency access to this community. The new Emergency Room will help reduce traffic on the island, as residents will no longer have to drive off the island to receive emergency care.

Convenience and Employment Opportunities

The new Emergency Room will not only provide convenience to residents but also offer employment opportunities for healthcare providers who currently have to commute to other areas to work. This will help reduce traffic on the island and provide a better work-life balance for healthcare professionals.

Trend in Healthcare: Bringing Services to the Community

The free-standing Emergency Rooms around the Lowcountry, including the one on Johns Island, are part of a trend in healthcare to bring services out into communities where people live, work, and play. With traffic in the Lowcountry being a significant concern, this trend is expected to continue, providing convenience and accessibility to healthcare services for residents.

Infrastructure and Traffic Concerns

Charleston City Councilman Jim McBride, who lives on Johns Island, expressed concerns about the infrastructure on the island being overwhelmed. However, he believes that the new Emergency Room will be a positive development, as it will provide a service that currently requires residents to drive off the island.

Future Plans and Developments

Trident Health System is planning two more free-standing Emergency Rooms in the Lowcountry, one in Long Point in Mount Pleasant and another in Cane Bay in the Summerville area. These developments are expected to improve healthcare services in the region and provide more convenient access to emergency care for residents.

The new Emergency Room on Johns Island is a significant development in the region’s healthcare landscape, and it is expected to have a positive impact on the community. With its convenient location and range of services, it will provide residents with quicker access to emergency care and help reduce traffic on the island.
